The Country
Two hundred years ago Napoleon was asked his opinion on China. The Emperor replied: "There it sleeps a giant. Let it sleep, because when it wakes up, the World will shake."
Nowadays, The Middle Kingdom is awake, and the planet closely follows its progress. Not surprisingly, the economy of this country of 1.3 billion inhabitants is now the second largest, and its products are the most consumed on the planet.
Its capital, Beijing, is a megalopolis of 17 million who reflect the path of the new China. Its strongest rival is Shanghai, financial capital and most populated city in the country, with 25 million citizens.
Beyond the cities there is an incredible geographic and human diversity. China has room enough for jungle, mountain, Siberian taiga and desert. The main ethnic group, the Han people, representing more than 90% of the population, coexists with the other 55 ethnic minorities adding a great cultural richness to the country.
China's fascinating history spans more than 4.000 years since the first dynasty. This ancient culture preserves its original writing system, a unique one more than 3,500 years old. Mandarin, or Putonghua, is the mother tongue of more than 70% of the population, and the country's official language. As well as its language, the Chinese people have over time given us the Great Wall, paper, the printing press, compass, gunpowder, porcelain, silk and kung fu.
China seems to be a country taken out of the Guinness Book. And there is so much more beyond this introduction. Do you fancy discovering together this Country of the Records(?).
