The City

Frantic and dynamic Guangzhou, or Canton, has a historical importance for having been one of the first cities in China to trade overseas. Nowadays, the capital of the southern province of Guangdong is the third largest city in China, followed by Shanghai and Beijing.

Nevertheless, what actually brings fame to Guangdong province, and therefore, its capital, is its cuisine. A Chinese saying asserts that it is a privilege: To be born in Suzhou, have fun in Hangzhou and eat in Guangzhou. The food is also extremely varied and another saying affirms that Cantonese people eat anything that has legs and is not table and anything that flies and is not a plan. Cantonese cuisine is China’s regional internationally most well-known. To such an extent is so, that what is recognized as Chinese food in most countries is nothing but its Cantonese variety.

Although, currently, Canton is a modern city with a lively night life and big shopping centres, out of the main streets it is still possible to find spots of strong picturesque character.

Guangzhou is some two long hours by bus, and around one hour train distance to the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.
