Study Chinese in Shanghai
The City
Colossal and futuristic, city of excesses, country’s commercial and financial centre, Paris of the East, Shanghai is the most populated city of China and one of the most populated of the world, with more than 20 million people. Originally a foreign colony, nowadays this city of chameleonic façade is an icon of China’s economic progress and a sample of its best face; the one that is proud to show to the world.
Aside from its potential as a shopping and nightlife paradise, what Shanghai offers to the pedestrian is precisely that mixture of its colonial past and a voluptuous modernity. As a symbol of the city, the Bund offers a majestic line of buildings made in New York 30s style. Particularly beautiful at night, the best thing one can do is to walk down the street as compares the relics of the past to the illuminated skyscrapers of Pudong, just in the opposite bank of river Huangpu.
Although more hidden than in other Chinese cities, it is still possible to find in Shanghai some traditional neighbourhoods. Southern to the Bund, the old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets full with people, clothes hanging from the windows and temples full with smoke.
