The City

Thirty years ago, Shenzhen was just a small fishing village bordering Hong Kong. But it happened to be chosen by Deng Xiao Ping as the laboratory to change from a communist economy to the market economy. The outcome could have not been more successful. Nowadays, with 10 million people, Shenzhen is one of the richest cities in China and one of the world’s megalopolis.

The main attractive of this young and vibrant city; paradise of businessmen and fortune seekers, Chinese or foreigners, is its socio-cultural diversity. Being a city created from scratch and populated by entrepreneurs and immigrants from all over the country, the visitor possibly will hear here more accents than in any other metropolis of the country. Maybe because of its nature of everybody’s city, its inhabitants have an excellent character and the tourist might get attached to the place by that mixture of kindness and curiosity with which they are treated.

Shenzhen was the window open to the world of a country confined to itself. And this is the name of one of the theme parks that deliver leisure to its inhabitants. Shijie Zhi Chuang (Window of the World) contains reproductions at different scales of 118 monuments and tourist spots all over the world, such us the Egyptian Pyramids, Sydney Opera House, or Niagara Falls or Segovia Fortress. Above all stands out the Eiffel Tower, an extraordinary copy of 108 metres with two lifts that lead you to its top, provoking a feeling of confusion, as it is so similar to the original one.
